It’s the season for ceremonial shovels.
With the weather breaking, Indianapolis city officials have broken ground on several high-profile projects in March, including the Purple Line construction, Monon Trail widening, Broad Ripple Avenue improvements and West Morris Street reconstruction.
Not all of these will require complete road closures — yet.
But they come in addition to several long-term projects still chugging along, such as the North Split interchange reconstruction downtown and the revamping of brick-covered Market Street near Monument Circle.
Here are the significant road closures and detours to expect in April as part of these and other projects:
Downtown streets under I-65/I-70 (North Split)
Central Avenue: Through mid-April.
Delaware/11th Street ramp to I-70 East: Through early summer.
Lewis Street: Through late May.
Market Street: Through mid-April.
Ohio Street: Through late May.
Vermont Street: Through mid-April.
10th Street: Through mid-April.
East 38th Street
Where: Eastbound lanes from Fall Creek Parkway to Keystone Avenue.
When: Beginning around April 4 and lasting 130 days.
Why: IndyGo’s Purple Line construction.
Detour: Eastbound traffic will turn north on Fall Creek Parkway to meet Keystone Avenye. One westbound lane will remain open. IndyGo routes 4 and 39 outbound bus stops will be closed and temporary stops created.

College Avenue Bridge
Where: Over Central Canal, north of Broad Ripple Avenue.
When: April 4 through the fall.
Why: Bridge maintenance, including partial replacement of the bridge deck, a new overlay and widened sidewalks.
Detour: Use Kessler Boulevard, Meridian Street and 71st Street.
West Market Street
Where: The westbound lane between Illinois Street to Monument Circle, and the eastern two lanes of Illinois Street near the intersection with Market Street.
When: Until later this year.
Why: Reconstruction of the roadway and sidewalks, similar to a completed portion of East Market Street.
Detour: Take Illinois to Ohio to Pennsylvania to rejoin Market Street.
Various downtown streets
Where: Closures include Washington, Madison, Meridian, New York and more. View a race map at indymini.com.
When: 8-11:15 a.m. April 2.
Why: 10-mile race as part of the 500 Festival Miler Series.
Detour: Avoid downtown and areas immediately south and west.
East 71st Street
Where: The road and multi-use trail beneath I-465, between Avalon Trail Court and Shadeland Avenue.
When: For much of the year, except a brief reopening in late May.
Why: To install steel supports for an expanded I-465 bridge over 71st Street as part of INDOT’s Clear Path project.
Detour: Shadeland Avenue, 75th Street and Binford Boulevard.

South Madison Avenue Bridge
Where: Over I-465.
When: Through August.
Why: Demolition and replacement.
Detour: Follow Thompson Road, Keystone Avenue and Hanna Avenue.
East Banta Road
Where: Between Derbyshire Road and Twin Brooks Drive.
When: Through late July.
Why: To replace the bridge over Derbyshire Creek, including new guardrails and pavement approaches on either side.
Detour: Via McFarland Road, Southport Road and Madison Avenue. Residents will be able to access their homes.
Southport Road
Where: Intersection with Mann Road.
When: Through early June.
Why: A project to improve the safety of the intersection, including road realignment and traffic signal improvements.
Detour: I-465.
Emerson Avenue
Where: Between Southeastern Avenue and Raymond Street.
When: Through the summer.
Why: Rehabilitation of the bridge over Bean Creek.
Detour: Use Raymond Street and Southeastern Avenue.
East Pleasant Run Parkway North Drive
Where: Between Shelby and Linden streets.
When: Through mid-June.
Why: A Citizens Energy Group sewer rehabilitation project.
Detour: Use East Pleasant Run Parkway South Drive.
