GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A high-end lighting and furniture company has received a $300,000 state grant for its plan to open a second location in the Grand Rapids area and create at least 50 full-time jobs.
Roll & Hill is planning on moving its lighting production facility from Brooklyn, New York, to 6192 Valduga Drive SW in Wyoming. The company was founded in Brooklyn in 2010, and currently operates a furniture production facility in the city of Wyoming at 5765 Clay Avenue SW.
Jason Miller, creative director and CEO of Roll & Hill, said he doesn’t have a specific timeline for adding the 50 jobs. But he added that “in all likelihood it will be within three years.” He said his company is expected to move into its new space on Valduga Drive in June.
“As Roll & Hill continues to expand, Wyoming remains an excellent location for our growth,” he said in a statement. “Our experience opening our first location in Wyoming was exceptional, and we’re looking forward to establishing our second.
Roll & Hill currently employs 68 people, 22 of whom are in Michigan, according to a memo from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC).
The company is set to receive a $300,000 grant from the MEDC for creating 50 new jobs at its planned Wyoming lighting production facility. An MEDC memo says the grant dollars will be paid to the company “over a one-year period” and is contingent upon the company meeting its job creation goals.
The terms of the grant are in effect through January 2026, and the jobs are expected to pay an average wage of $922 per-week plus benefits, the MEDC memo says.
The company’s planned space in Wyoming is new construction and is being developed by Vision Real Estate Investment. The investment in the new space, which will be leased by Roll & Hill, is valued at $1.5 million, according to the MEDC.
Roll & Hill is moving its lighting production facility to Wyoming because its Brooklyn, New York location “has expanded to the point where it is too expensive to operate,” according to the MEDC. The company’s planned move comes as their current lease in Brooklyn is coming to an end, the MEDC said.
The Right Place, a Grand Rapids-based economic development group, worked with the MEDC as Roll & Hill made the request for the $300,000 grant.
“It has been exciting to watch Roll & Hill’s growth in Wyoming since the opening of their initial design and production facility in 2020,” Brent Case, vice president of business attraction for The Right Place, said in a statement.
“West Michigan offers an ideal environment for businesses to thrive, as evidenced by Roll & Hill’s decision to continue investing and creating jobs here.”
