Granger Lean Journey Reflection
Friday, Could 20, 2022 | Lean is a guiding philosophy at Granger Design. In the adhering to video, Granger Lean Operations Manager Chris Scharlach demonstrates on his Lean journey in the building market.
“I think I experienced listened to the time period ‘Lean’ possibly twelve yrs ago,” notes Scharlach. “But for me, it definitely to start with strike home … when we did the South Athletic Complex Job for the University of Michigan.”
The workforce was questioned to use a strategy pretty identical to the Last Planner System for scheduling, and an outdoors professional arrived to guide them by means of a boot camp.
“Up by way of that timeframe, Lean to me always just meant Lean Scheduling,” Scharlach continues. “For a great deal of the subcontractors, it was their initial foray into Lean. But it was very thriving. We bought acquire-in from all the trades, and they noticed the value in undertaking it.”
Lean concepts originated in manufacturing, and Scharlach notes some persons struggled at very first with the relationship to design. In manufacturing you do a repetitious process each day and take into consideration, how can you do it “better, faster, more rapidly, leaner?” But each and every working day is diverse on a design task. On the other hand, when you break a task down, you can commence to see repetitive responsibilities, like drywall.
“Or you’re setting up a hotel home. You do that same area 150 periods [and] by place 50, you’ve figured out all the bugs and all the flaws, and the final 100 are likely to be best.”
Searching at exactly where Granger Building is currently in its Lean journey, Scharlach notes that many of the functions groups across projects employ Lean concepts daily.
“They’re often obtaining greater approaches to do stuff, and then they share that outward, and then other groups undertake it. So, I consider we do a lot extra than we realize.”
