A 25-year-old man was found shot to death in downtown Dallas late Thursday, police said.
Officers were dispatched to an apartment in the 500 block of South Ervay Street, near Marilla Street, about 10 p.m. and found a man with a single gunshot wound. The man, identified by the Dallas County medical examiner’s office as Du’Vonta Lampkin, died at the scene.
Police said that the apartment was an Airbnb and that Lampkin’s friends had rented it out for him while he moved into a new apartment. Lampkin was supposed to check out of the Airbnb on Friday, police said.
Friends went to the apartment to check on Lampkin after failing to reach him by phone, police said. His backpack, cellphone and wallet were missing, police said.
Lampkin attended the University of Oklahoma from 2015 through 2018 and played for the football team as a defensive tackle, according to KFOR-TV.
He declared for the NFL Draft in 2018. He went undrafted but later signed with the Tennessee Titans and played for a short period.
Lampkin’s brother Eddie Lampkin, a basketball player at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, confirmed Lampkin’s death on Twitter.
