CV Link construction, tennis tourney may slow traffic in La Quinta, Indio. Here’s what you need to know

Traffic through La Quinta and Indio may be impacted by construction of CV Link and motorists should plan for delays or consider using alternate routes through March 31.

In La Quinta, construction is expected to begin March 14, impacting traffic on Washington Street, Adams Street, Dune Palms Road and Jefferson Street, where the roads cross the Coachella Valley Stormwater Channel.

Motorists may be slowed by truck traffic in and out of the site, the Coachella Valley Association of Governments, lead agency in building CV Link, said in a news release.

Traffic on Washington Street in La Quinta may also be impacted by the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament, taking place through March 20 in Indian Wells.

General parking for the tournament, at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, is off Washington Street and Miles Avenue. Motorists should expect tournament-related delays especially during the hours of 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m., Indian Wells officials said.

To reduce travel delays and minimize traffic, motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes.

CVAG sent out a similar announcement of traffic slowdowns in Indio last week, saying CV Link construction could impact Jefferson Street, Miles Avenue and Fred Waring Drive where they cross the wash, though March 31.

Construction crews will have flaggers to direct traffic as needed. Motorists are asked to reduce speed as truck traffic will be heavy into and out of the site.

Together, seven miles of CV Link are being constructed in the two cities, along with a promontory point, and bridge over the stormwater channel, linking the city with Indio, has been under construction for a year.

The bridge will include an undercrossing as well as on- and off-ramps for Jefferson Street and at Monroe and Jackson streets.

Construction on the promontory and bridge, which CVAG Executive Director Tom Kirk has described as like building a freeway, started a year ago.

La Quinta’s 2-mile portion of CV Link runs along the south side of the stormwater channel, from the east side of Washington to Jefferson Street.

Indio’s portion of the path runs from Jefferson Street to Indio Boulevard, where it will ultimately connect with Coachella’s portion of the CV Link.

Businesses near the wash may also be impacted by the noise and vibration of construction equipment, CVAG officials said.

“Every effort will be made to reduce the inconvenience to drivers and minimize any disturbance to the community,” officials said in the announcement.

CV Link is a $100 million, 40-mile biking, jogging, walking and small electric vehicle path slated to run through Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Palm Desert, La Quinta, Indio and Coachella. Voters in Rancho Mirage and Indian Wells have opted out of CV Link.

To date about 7.5 miles of CV Link have been completed with more than 15 miles of construction underway.

There are currently three segments of CV Link completed and open for use: 2.3 miles that runs between Ramon Road in Cathedral City and Vista Chino in Palm Springs; about 1 mile which runs adjacent to Demuth Park in Palm Springs; and 3.5 miles of an on-street stretch that runs from the Bump ‘n’ Grind trail head on Painters Path to College of the Desert, ultimately ending at the wash near Deep Canyon Road.
