Police confirmed that one person was killed and one person was injured in a shooting at a Durham apartment complex Friday morning.
Durham police said the man who died was Raheem Sharaf Clark Jr, 21, of Durham. Police said the second person who was shot had been taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
On Monday, no charges had been filed, police said in a news release.
The shooting occurred about 11:40 a.m. at the Cadence at RTP apartment complex on East Cornwallis Road, police said.
Officials say the shooting does not appear to be random. They have not filed any charges.
The apartment building is about two miles south of North Carolina Central University, and is geared toward college students and young professionals, according to its website.
The apartment complex was the site of an overnight shooting in February, which left two men dead and two other men injured and in need of treatment at a local hospital.
String of shootings in recent weeks
A series of shootings over the last two weeks in Durham left at least five people dead, and prompted the Durham Police Department to announce a new unit focused on gun violence.
At a press conference Wednesday, Police Chief Patrice Andrews said a total of 16 people had died in the city this year, and that officers had confiscated nearly 200 guns in the community.
“Violent crimes, in particular gun crimes, have been on the rise in our community and nationally,” Andrews said. “These single acts of violence forever change lives.”
Two peopled died in two separate shootings on Tuesday night alone.
A man and a teenage boy were both shot at by another man near the intersection of Holloway Street and North Alston Avenue, and were taken to the hospital after they tried to drive away from the scene and crashed a few blocks away.
The man died after reaching the hospital, police said, but the teenager was in stable condition as of Wednesday.
Less than an hour later, a woman was fatally shot at a house on West Carver Street when she answered the door, police said.
No charges had been filed in either shooting as of Wednesday, according to police.
Three shootings the week before, on April 8 and 9, left three other people dead, including a 22-year-old woman who was engaged. Her fiancé was also injured in the April 8 shooting, police said.
At the press conference on Wednesday, Andrews urged the public with information about the recent shootings to speak with police.
“We need tips, we need information,” Andrews said. “You live in this community too. You want the police department to do something, but you also have to be willing to take that step.”
