EVERETT — A man suffered first- and second-degree burns in an Everett apartment fire early Friday morning.

The fire broke out around 2:30 a.m. on the second floor of a garden-style apartment building in the 3600 block of Hoyt Avenue, according to the Everett Fire Department. The sound of breaking glass woke up a neighbor, who reported seeing flames coming from the apartment.

The neighbor told occupants of the surrounding units to evacuate.

Firefighters were able to stop the fire from spreading to those other units. A man in his 50s who lived in the unit with the fire was able to evacuate. He was taken to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett before being transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, according to the fire department.

Two apartments were damaged, one from the fire and the other from smoke and water. The building management was able to relocate the displaced tenants.

The financial cost of the damage was unknown Friday. The cause was also unclear, according to the fire department.

The Everett Fire Marshal’s Office was investigating.
